OUT? Sherdog.com is reporting that Shinya Aoki is out of the lightweight tournament due to being banged up in his win yesterday over Gesias Calvananti, and that Calvancanti was offered the spot on the 5/11 show in Saitama, but negotiations between the sides fell apart and he returned home. K-1 has yet to confirm Aoki being out, but hinted at a press conference earlier that he was banged up and it was possible. Credit: The Wrestling Observer NO BUZZ? Wrestling Observer got a ton of feedback from people in New York/New Jersey regarding the promotion of the Elite XC show for 5/31. It was scary because it was 100% unanimous that people said there is no sign of a pulse or buzz for the show, even compared with the last IFL show at the Izod Center. Lots of comments from people who said they wouldn't even know about it except being hardcores and that even friends who know Kimbo Slice's name have no idea he's fighting in the area or it's a CBS live show. One person noted hearing an ad on ESPN radio which mentioned Slice and nobody else, but no billboards and nothing in the subway system. A WFAN regular said he's heard no ads for the show, but that UFC, WWE and IFL all advertise on the station. The K-1/Dream Middlewight Grand Prix finals will be 9/23 at the Saitama Super Arena. Credit: The Wrestling Observer Newsletter
PASS- The University of Virginia at Wise, VA has decided against allowing anymore MMA events on campus after several injuries on a 4/5 show that drew 600 fans and raised $3,000 for the athletic fund. The school didn't explain why, but it is believed that it was because fighter Adam Bentley was carried out on a stretcher with blood coming out of his mouth and taken to the hospital for dehydration and exhaustion, and two fighters suffered dislocated elbows. The blood was from a busted lip and Bentley actually fought a week later. It was a non-sanctioned amateur show as Virginia doesn't require sanctioning of amateur MMA events.
