Its been a while since I last had the chance to review a Cagerage DVD. So this was going to be a re-introduction into the UK’s biggest MMA cage fighting company. The DVD started and straight away I was feeling rather let down as over dubbed music was played to the ‘Nuts’ girls making their way to the ring most of them looked like they would rather be anywhere else than getting paid to look good and help frame the event and then some strange dancers on stilts gyrating around the octagon. This seemed to go on for ever and when it eventually finished I was ready Things unfortunately got worse in the production stakes as the fighters had sort of pre fight interviews, with the over dubbing of born to fight theme music playing in the back ground. They were in front of some blue screen effect, with one of the worst voice over’s I have ever heard. Then onto the entrances they also were over dubbed and gave the overall production a more of an amateur look, which is a shame when the quality of the card was so good. The commentary was clear and full of information on the fighters and all moves called clear. The only real issue with the commentary was the lack of crowd sound in the audio mix. So the event felt empty and if ever you have been to any sporting event at Wembley Arena you will know how loud even a half full arena can sound, unfortunately when the crowd were loud it was not really picked up in the mix. I personally would have liked to hear a more 50/50 mix of commentary and crowd noise. The camera shots were clear and caught most if not all the action in the ring. I have said this before in other Cagerage reviews, a time clock is needed on the screen to help build up the excitement. The fighters stats and on screen graphics were very good. I feel that so far all I have given is the negatives and yes that’s actually true, so far all I have seen are the negatives. The card:
Right all the negatives on the production aside, its time to get down to the action in the Cagerage Octagon. On to the action, well if you look at the card there are 12 fights billed so you know your in for an action packed DVD and the bouts were not disappointing at all. The booking of these Cagerage events is known for quality and good match ups and Cagerage 20 does not let you down. With one of the fastest submissions I have ever seen from Masakazu Imanari, he just flew into the air and caught Olivier with a triangle and as they hit the floor he converted it into armbar and Olivier did no know what hit him. Riccio hits one of the most impressive moves on the DVD a monster hitting bicycle kick, and the some what controversial Butterbean win over Thompson. Again the biggest let down was the production, two of the big matches were cut to a few minutes of footage with no warning, I was sat there watching then realised the fight was over in round 3 in one fight and no idea what was happening in the other. This to me is misleading as the DVD boasts a monster card and to cut short two big matches because of time constraints on the DVD is stupid when at least 35% of the DVD is filled with arty farty footage, graphics, and stretched pre match promo’s that in reality could have been over in quarter of the time and would have given the viewer the full matches. In summing up this has to be one of the worst MMA DVD’s I have ever watched and for once its not down to the booking or bouts as that was awesome and would make any fight fan want to attend a Cagerage event live. What lets this DVD is the poor production, I have another 2 Cagerage DVD’s to review and I am really hoping they improve on quality.
