UFC 71: Liddell vs Jackson – DVD review Discussion in the lead up to the main event, which generated a record level of media coverage for the sport in the US, revolved around whether Liddell as the current Light Heavyweight Champion, could win back the last loss on his record. Would the fight live up to the hype? When it comes to “The Iceman” and “Rampage”, anything is possible… As usual, the rest of the fight card is packed with current and rising UFC stars. Expert grappler Karo Parisyan takes on the awesome wrestling skills of Josh Burkman, as the two battle in out for supremacy in a welterweight bout! The Ultimate Fighter Series 3 star Kalib Starnes goes head-to-head with Chris Leben in a mammoth fight that will test both the competitors’ skills and stamina. Meanwhile Terry Martin and Ivan Salaverry prepare to reinforce the United States vs. Canada rivalry, as the two opposing nationals square up. Will Martin’s punching power overcome Salaverry’s well-rounded fighting nature, or will the Canadian take victory? UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson features the following bouts: Chuck Liddell vs. Quinton Jackson DVD special features include a behind the scenes featurette on Liddell and Jackson. Review: The latest DVD release from FightDVD.co.uk & The UFC see’s the UFC fighters take it to the octagon in front of a massive 14,500 sell out crowd at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas. To start off I decided to check out the bonus feature of the behind the scenes and build up to the main event between Chuck Liddell and Quinton Jackson. This was an interesting look into the what goes into making a fight as big as this, with all the photo shoots, video segments covered mixed with interviews from both parties and other fighters made this documentary one of best bonus features I have seen on a UFC DVD release ever. The DVD as expected from fightDVD & the UFC was produced to a high quality. The commentary, pre fight segments made this DVD a joy to watch. The UFC 71 card featured is pretty loaded and with 4 of the prelim fights featured, this might put a lot of MMA fans off as the main card fights are over pretty quick, I actually enjoyed the prelims as much as I enjoyed the main fight card. One of the prelims fights that really impressed me had to be the fight between Jeremy Stephens (UFC debut) vs Din Thomas, in the opening round Din Thomas looked to be close to getting a 1st round victory after almost choking out Stephens. Stephens somehow managed to turn it around, stood up and exploded like a pitbull. He attacked Thomas with a flurry of hard hits and even invited him back to his feet just before the end of the round. Round two and there was a lot of stand up exchanging punches, they both went down to the mat and the experience of the UFC vetran Thomas soon shone through as he almost snapped Stephens arm with an armbar. The majority of the main fight card was pretty exciting with in my opinion one of the closest fight cards in recent pay per view events. The main event, which had a lot of hype and build up over the few weeks prior to this UFC pay per view. The stare down its self gave me goose bumps and this was a fight I was personally looking forward to more than any in recent months. The fight itself was over in less than 2 minutes and a new champion was born. Chuck Liddell took a monster punch on the chin that sent him crashing to the mat and Jackson then jumped on top and the referee big John McCarthy had to jump in and stop it as Liddell went limp. Over all one of the most exciting UFC DVD’s in recent times and one I would recommend someone new and old to the UFC. This DVD is available from all good UFC stockists and can be found at: http://www.fightdvd.co.uk for only £10.99. |
