K-1 World GP Final 2006 DVD Review

If you ever get bored or annoyed at Eurosport’s coverage of K-1, then you might want to watch this DVD. Showcasing the sport at its finest, this DVD is brilliant.

The night started with our commentators Michael Schiavello and Mike Bernardo, who introduced us to the final during the usual parade of fighters. There was an amazing amount of talent on display. With the likes of Ernesto Hoost, previous winner Semmy Schilt and Remy Bonjasky fighting, we were guaranteed a great tournament.

It was certainly that. The tournament had its fair share of up’s and down’s, not to mention the unfortunate injury to Bonjasky towards the end of the night. Many fancied the Dutchman to win the tournament so it was a huge disappointment.

Make no mistake about it; this DVD has pretty much everything going for it. You have the legendary Ernesto Hoost battling against some of MMA brightest young hopefuls and while it looked increasingly unlikely that he would be able to stop an absolute powerhouse such as Semmy Schilt, let me tell you, he made a pretty good go of it.

There were several fights that sat up and literally exploded through your screen. Take Glaube Feitosa’s dominating performance against Ruslan Karaev and the blink and you’ll miss it fight between Melvin Manhoef and Ray Sefo which ended with the man from New Zealand picking up the victory by knockout.

One man to certainly keep an eye on throughout the night is Peter Aerts. Starting the night as simply a reserve fighter, Aerts completes an almost “Rocky” like comeback to nearly win the tournament. It really is sensational viewing. You’ll have to buy this DVD to see how well he does, but quite simply, he defies almost all the odds.

This was my first taste of K-1 and I must say, I was very impressed. There was just something about this tournament that I really enjoyed. I think the idea of having a “king of the ring” style tournament is always fantastic to follow and especially if it has some of the best MMA in the world like this one does. It was great.

It was also hugely encouraging to see that outside of the UFC, there are some fantastic fighters who are still making names for themselves. I was particularly impressed with Semmy Schilt, who just tore through some of his opponents at times.

If you want to watch something different than UFC, and if you have an extra couple of hours spare, then you should watch this DVD. It’s great entertainment with a few added extras thrown in to wet your appetite. Get this DVD now, you’ll love it.
